FAQs Crowdsourcing
Having logged in to your user account, you can select a digital work which you would like to edit. Then click on “Participate!” followed by “Edit full text”.
Pages on which the automatic text recognition did not find any text, such as empty pages or title pages, offer the options “Insert new word” and “Transcribe”. With “Insert new word”, you can select individual words that were not recognized automatically and enter the correct transcription on the right. By selecting “What would you like to insert” you can determine where to add the new word. Such words will be highlighted in yellow in the viewer display.
You can save your transcription and it will be accessible on the Grimm Portal after a second saving. When you have finished editing a page, you can select the checkbox next to “This page has been completed” and then click on “Finish this page”. If you would like to leave the editing mode, you can click on the small button next to the university logo, which will bring you back to the image view screen.

Crowdsourcing refers to the outsourcing of a task to a wider group of volunteers, for example via the internet. Crowdsourcing utilizes the motivation, enthusiasm as well as expertise and skills of people from outside of the institution setting the task. By taking part in crowdsourcing, users who do not belong to the sphere of professional research and scholarship can support the description and analysis of manuscripts and printed sources as well as image archives online. Crowdsourcing also offers a valuable addition to research by generating new knowledge.
The Grimm Portal offers a wide range of opportunities for participation: the identification of places, occasions or people in historic images of the photographic collection by contributors with a proficiency in local history. For handwriting experts, the transcription of historical letters or manuscripts is another option.
Can I report mistakes and suggest additions with regard to texts and descriptions? Can I correct mistakes and make additions myself?
Using the crowdsourcing module, you can correct existing texts, transcribe manuscript sources and add additional content and comments.
When you click the “Collaborate on digitised material” button next to the viewer you access the overview page. This is the entry point to the crowdsourcing functionality for that specific digital work. It displays the total number pages with user edits and gives an overview of recent user activity on that work. It also provides a link to the crowdsourcing help text (click on the question mark at the top of the page).
